There are many places in our country, where people treats menstruation as a taboo and talking openly about periods is not so natural but recently, a film on periods got our country an Oscar. Yes! You heard right. India won Oscar for Best Documentary in short subject category.
A film ‘Period. End of Sentence’ directed by Raykar Zehtabchi and produced by Punjabi women Guneet Amarpreet Kaur Monga, has won Oscar 2019. This movie is 26 minute short film based upon the unawareness about mensturation in rural area. The movie is the story of the girls and women of Hapur which is in Uttar Pradesh and their experiences about Pad machine which get installed in their village. The whole concept revolves around the superstitions of people regarding periods and males of the place considers menstruation as taboo. Guneet even shared her picture with oscar on her social media account.
Furthermore, this documentary also shows us the work of real life padman “Arunachalam Muruganantham”. This film shows us the fact about how women and girls of that place took charge of the installed machine and distribution of pads while creating awareness about menstruation. This realise documentary won the Oscar for best documentary in short subject category.
Talking about producer of this movie Guneet Amarpreet Monga, she has produced many remarkable movies like Zubaan, Masaan, the Lunchbox and many more. We can surely say that noteworthy work of this punjabi women made our country proud by winning Oscar.
